Maths: measuring area

First we practised finding the area of irregular shapes like the yellow one shown above. We found lots of ways to do it. One way is shown on the board. Can you think of other ways? Whichever way we use, we always get the same answer.

After that we tried an area question with words in it. It was not as easy as it looked! We had to read it carefully. Then we worked out the area of both the paintings. Finally we found the difference between the two areas. Questions like this are easy if we do them in steps. It is impossible to get straight from the question to the answer. We must solve the problem one step at a time.

At home please do Abacus SDM page 16 questions 1 to 9. Remember that you have to find the area and the perimeter of each blue shape. Enjoy doing your homework.
