Literacy: parts of a story

This morning we looked at the different parts of a story. There are four main parts.

  • The setting is where and when the story happens. It might be a story from the past, the present or the future. It might be set in a magical land of wizards and castles, or it might be on a planet in a distant galaxy.

  • The characters are the people in the story. There is usually a main character (the hero or heroine) and often there is a bad character (the villain).

  • The problem is the main point of the story. The villain might be keeping someone prisoner, or the hero might have to save the whole world.

  • The resolution is the ending, when all the problems are solved and the characters can live happily ever after.

We thought of stories we knew, and we wrote about the four parts of our chosen story.
